• Alt. Birth, 11 Oct 1869, Lennep, , Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. 8 In a letter from Martha's grandson, Hubert Bury, he indicates her date of birth as 11 Oct 1869. The 1900 Census reports the birth year as 1867, and her immigration record on board the ship Eider in 1885 also indicates 1867. Further research, such as checking her tombstone inscription, is needed.

The Eider was a new ship built in 1883. It was a 4722 gross ton iron built vessel, built by John Elder & Co. of Glasgow, for Norddeutscher Lloyd. Her dimensions were length 429.8 ft x beam 47 ft, straight stem, two funnels, four masts, single screw and a speed of 16 knots. There was accommodation for 120-1st class, 130-2nd class and 1,000-3rd class passengers. She was launched on 15 Dec 1883 and left Bremen for Southampton and New York on her maiden voyage on 19 Mar 1884. She left Bremen on her last voyage on 31 Jan 1892 and stranded on Atherfield Ledge, Isle of Wight, was refloated and scrapped.

• Census, 1900, Salisbury Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, USA. 5 The 1900 Census for Salisbury Township in Lehigh County lists Hubert Bury, age 43, born Apr 1857 in Germany, parents born in Germany, occupation jeweler, renting his home. He was married for 16 years to Martha A., wife, born Oct 1867 in Germany, parents born in Germany. In 1900 she had born seven children, four of whom were still living.
With them is daughter Helen C., born Apr 1885 in Germany, age 15, single. Helen, Hubert, and Martha all immigrated in 1886. All can read and write English. Also in the home are three children born in Pennsylvania: Frank H., born Aug 1886; Violet P., born Jun 1892; and Martin H., born Oct 1898.

[Note for researchers: Hubert is indexed in this census as Burg, not Bury, although the handwriting of the census taker clearly wrote Bury. His immigration is incorrectly reported as 1886, but should have been 1885. Further, on the ship's passenger list his name appears as Burg, not Bury!]

Heinrich Papenkuhl and his wife Alwine nie Volgemann, born in Brandenburg am Harvel, Germany, Oct 19th 1867, baptized 15 of Nov. 1867 at Brandenburg, confirmed in the State Church of Germany at Unter Barmen Apr. 10th 1881, married June 25th, 1884...and
Emma May Jobsl, wife of Chas. Jobsl, non-member, daughter of Silas A. F. Biery & his wife Liby E. m. n. Carskadden, born March 28th, 1866 at Greenville, PA, baptized Jan. 17th in Siegersville, confirmed Nov. 19th 1881 in the Lutheran Church at Longswamp, married Dec. 17th 1886...
were received by the right hand of fellowship at the Sunday morning service, May 17th, 1903. S. H. Gapp, pastor."

Bury, member of this church since May 17, 1903 - daughter of G. Heinrich Papenkuhl and his wife Alwine nee Vogelmann, born in Brandenburg am Harvele Deutschland, Oct 19, 1867, baptized Nov 15\super th\nosupersub of the same year. Confirmed in the State Church at Unter-Barmen Apr. 10\super th\nosupersub 1881. Married 25 June, 1884 and soon after came to America. She has been ailing for some years, underwent several operations, for nearly seven months she was bedfast from dropsey, tumour and other complications. She suffered intensely, but with great resignation to the Master's will. The end came on Sunday, July 24\super th\nosupersub , 1904 at 12:30 noon. Her age 36 years, 9 months, 5 days. Besides her husband, two sons and two daughters survive her. Funeral took place on Thursday, July 28\super th\nosupersub . After brief English services at the house, 1222 Gordon St., Allentown, German service was held in the church with deceased favorite Psalm for text, Ps. 23, followed by interment in the plot of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Worman, on our cemetery."
