  Death Notes:

A copy of Helen Benfield's death certifcate was obtained from Pennsylvania. Written in 1973, the informant who supplied the information for the death certificate is listed as Helen Barnes, her niece.

The death certificate states Helen (Bury) Benfield was born 30 Apr 1885 in Essen, Germany, and died on 23 Oct 1973 at age 88.

Her father is listed as Hubert Bury and her mother as Martha Papenkuhl. Helen was widowed. Her mailing address at that time was 2524 W. Emmaus Avenue in Allentown, PA, on the road between that city and Emmaus, and her place of residence is recorded as Lehigh County, but she died 12 miles from there in Quakertown in Burks County at the Yingst Nursing Home. The cause of death was cardiac arrest folllowing ASHD due to hypertension due to senility.

She was buried on 10/27/73 at the Old Moravian Cemetery and the undertaker was J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home in Allentown.

1. She was naturalized according to the 1930 US Census in 1885.

2. She immigrated on the ship Eider, sailing from Bremen, Germany, last from Southampton, England, arriving on 18 Jul 1885 to New York, New York, NY. 16 17 In the ship's passenger register are:

Burg, Martha, age 18, wife, from Lennep, Germany
Burg, Helene, age 2 months, from Lennep, Germany

The Eider was a new ship built in 1883. It was a 4722 gross ton iron built vessel, built by John Elder & Co. of Glasgow, for Norddeutscher Lloyd. Her dimensions were length 429.8 ft x beam 47 ft, straight stem, two funnels, four masts, single screw and a speed of 16 knots. There was accommodation for 120-1st class, 130-2nd class and 1,000-3rd class passengers. She was launched on 15 Dec 1883 and left Bremen for Southampton and New York on her maiden voyage on 19 Mar 1884. She left Bremen on her last voyage on 31 Jan 1892 and stranded on Atherfield Ledge, Isle of Wight, was refloated and scrapped.

3. Census in 1900 in Salisbury Twp., Lehigh, PA. 18 The 1900 Census for Salisbury Township in Lehigh County lists Hubert Bury, age 43, born Apr 1857 in Germany, parents born in Germany, occupation jeweler, renting his home. He was married for 16 years to Martha A., wife, born Oct 1867 in Germany, parents born in Germany. In 1900 she had born seven children, four of whom were still living.
With them is daughter Helen C., born Apr 1885 in Germany, age 15, single. Helen, Hubert, and Martha all immigrated in 1886. All can read and write English. Also in the home are three children born in Pennsylvania: Frank H., born Aug 1886; Violet P., born Jun 1892; and Martin H., born Oct 1898.

[Note for researchers: Hubert is indexed in this census as Burg, not Bury, although the handwriting of the census taker clearly wrote Bury. His immigration is incorrectly reported as 1886, but should have been 1885. Further, on the ship's passenger list his name appears as Burg, not Bury!].

5. Newspaper: Allentown Leader, 7 Feb 1903, Allentown, Lehigh, PA. 20 Emaus. The Lehigh Valley Trust & Safe Deposit Company has been appoined by the Court as guardian of Mrs. Charles E. Worman of Emaus Junction, whose husband died recently of injuries received at Pennsburg. As Mrs. Worman is a minor she could not receive the death benefits of the Relief Association, of which deceased was a member, and consequently she had a legal guardian appointed to act for her.

7. Census in 1910 in Allentown, Lehigh, PA. 5 Horace N. Benfield, age 27, occupation house painter, is listed living at 229 West Street in Allentown in the 1910 Census in enumeration district 0160 as visit 0151. Living with him is his wife, Helen, age 24, whose birthplace is listed as Germany and 1885 as the year she immigrated, which is her year of birth. She was married to Horace for 4 years at in 1910 had no children born. Her marital status is listed as M2, to indicate this was her second marriage -- Horace is listed as M1. Also in the household is brother-in-law Frank H. Bury, age 23, single, bookkeeper in a cement mill; sister-in-law Violet P. Bury, age 17, single, stitchery in a shoe factory; and brother-in-law Martin H. Bury, age 11, single. Horace and his parents were born in Pennsylvania. Frank, Violet, and Martin were born in Pennsylvania with both parents born in Germany.

10. Census in 1920 in Allentown, Lehigh, PA. 24 The 1920 Census shows that renting a home at 938 Hamilton Street in Allentown was the household of Horace N. Benfield, age 37, paper hanger, living with wife Helen C., age 34. Living with them are Martin H. Bury, brother in law, 21, a purchasing agent in a steel works; and Helen B. Hale, age 6 [Helen's neice who is the daughter of Violet P. Bury]. Helen's parents were both born in Germany, as was she, and her date of immigration is listed as 1887 [although it really was 1885.].

11. Residence: in 1930 in Allentown, Lehigh, PA. The 1930 census recorded renting at 938 Hamilton St: Horace M. Benfield, paper hanger and painter, 47, living with wife Helen C., 44; and Helen's niece, Helen B. Hale, 16. Helen C. and her parents were born in Germany, the others in Pennsylvania.

Census in 1940 in Allentown, Lehigh, PA. 25 The 1940 census recorded renting at 241 Ninth St: Helen Hale, nurse in doctor's office, 26, single, born in Pennsylvania, living with her aunt, Helen Benfield, widow, 55, born in Germany. They were in the same place in 1935. Hale had 3 years of college education, Benfield had completed the 8th grade. Hale had earned $1200 in 1939.

15. Obituary: Morning Call: obituary of Mrs. Helen Worman Benfield on 26 Oct 1973 in Allentown, Lehigh, PA. Mrs. Helen Worman Benfield, 88, who resided with her niece, Helen, wife of Harold Barnes, at 2524 W. Emmaus town, died Wednesday in the Yingst Nursing Home, Quakertown. She was the widow of Charles Worman and Horace Benfield.
Born in Essen, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Hubert and Martha (Pahpenkuhl) Bury. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Surviving are a brother, Martin H. Bury of Haverford, Montgomery County; and a sister, Violet, wife of Winslow Barrigan of Lansdowne, Delaware County. Calling hours will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday in the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, 1601 Hamilton Allentown, followed by graveside services in Old Moravian Cemetery, Emmaus.
