Palm United Church of Palmyra Has Colorful History
Church services were held in Palmyra as early as 1842 but there was no established church. Eventually plans to provide a Lutheran and Reformed church were formulated and two lots were donated by Philip Matter and Samuel Segner. The site was in the 700 block on the south side of West Main Street.
Actual work was begun when on May 12, 1845, the cornerstone was laid. The church was called Palm Church. Serving as the first pastor was the Rev. J. T. Vogelbach.

Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. Samuel's real estate was valued at $2500. Also in their home was Henry Barnett, 25; Rosanna Miller, 23; Ruben Miller, 16; and Mary's mother, Anna Zimmerman, 60.

11. Obituary: Lebanon Daily News: Death of Samuel Segner on 3 Aug 1891 in Lebanon, Lebanon, PA. 12 Death of Samuel Segner.
Mr. Samuel Segner, of Saybrook, Ill., died in that place last Wednesday, aged 83 years. The deceased was a Lebanon countian by birth and lived in Palmyra. Later, in 1876 he dwelt in this city, when he moved West and located in the above place. The Danville Commercial says: "He was noted for his honesty and integrity and his christian devotion. He was a member of the First M. E. church and held the faith during his last moments. He leaves a wife and five children -- Geo. H., of this place; Joseph, of Lafayette, Ind., William, of Philadelphia; John, of Waco, Texas, and Mrs. Anna E. Stewart, of Saybrook. They were all at the funeral except John Segner.

12. Newspaper: Lebanon Courier Weekley Report: Death of a Former Lebanon Countian, 5 Aug 1891, Lebanon, Lebanon, PA. 6 Mr. Morris A. Knabel, of Bloomington, Illinois, formerly of Myerstown, kindly furnished us the following from the Bloomington Daily Pantagraph:
"Mr. Samuel Segner died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. M. Steward, in Saybrook, on Tuesday morning at four o'clock. He was born in Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, Januey 21, 1811, and went to Danville, Illinois, in 1869. He moved to Hoopeston in 1875. He with his aged wife, have been living with his daughter in Saybrook since 1888. His wife, who survives him has been blind for thirty years. He was a merchant tailor by occupation, at which business seventy years of his life were spent.
He was a member of the M. E. church at the time of his death, having been previously connected with the German Lutheran church in Pennsylvania for most of his life.
Services will be held at the residence of Mr. M. M. Stewart, in Saybrook, at nine o'clock this morning, after which the remains will be taken to Danville for interment."
