Car Driven by Irvin Bowers Collides with Freight

Irvin Bowers, 50, who resides in Brookside on Shippensburg 11. R. 2, remained in critical condition Monday with injuries suffered when his car collided with a train at the Brookside intersection near Walnut Bottom Sunday.

According to Carlisle state police, Mr. Bowers was driving south on legislative route 21007, on which he lives, when his car pulled in front of a Reading railroad freight train going west.

Mr. Bowers was taken to the Carlisle hospital by the Shippensburg community ambulance. The accident occurred Sunday at 9:10 a.m.

Attendants at the hospital said Mr. Bowers suffered a possible fractured skull, multiple cuts of the scalp and face and shock.

Mr. Bowers, who is working as a construction carpenter, is well known in the area. He formerly served as a supervisor in South Newton township.

State police said Samuel Adam Beecher, 65, of 607 16th st., New Cumberland was the engineer of the diesel freight train. Mr. Bowers' auto was completely demolished and the train received an estimated $100 damage.

CAMP HILL - Samuel M. Beecher, 89, 607 16th St., New Cumberland, died Tuesday in Holy Spirit Hospital.

He was a retired engineer with the Reading Railroad, a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 107, Retired Men's Club, New Cumberland, United Transportation Union Local 830, and the D. Floyd Mowery Men's Bible Class of Community United Methodist Church, New Cumberland.

He is survived by three sons, Samuel M. Beecher Jr., Dover, Wayne G. Beecher, Camp Hill, and Donald E. Beecher, Wormleysburg; two daughters, Marguerite McCall, Sanford, Maine, and Jean L. Nace, Mechanicsburg; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market St. The Rev. William J. Lippert will officiate. Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9.
