1. Census in 1880 in Lester Twp., Black Hawk, IA. 2 Henry Bucher, 45, grocer, was living with wife Rebecca, 41; Mattie, 11; Bernice, 7; Blance, 7; Nettie, 1. Also with them: Howard Page, clerk, 19. Henry and Rebecca and their parents were born in Pennsylvania. All th children were born in Iowa. Howard and his parents were born in Maine.

2. Census in 1900 in Dunkerton, Black Hawk, IA. 1 Henry W. Bucher, 65, born Nov 1834, was living with wife of 31 years, Rebecca, 61, Nov 1838; and daughter Nettie, 21, Dec 1888. Henry and Rebecca were and their parents were born in Pennsylvania; Hettie in Iowa.

3. Census in 1910 in Dunkerton, Black Hawk, IA. 3 Rebecca H. Bucher, 71, widowed, was operating a boarding house on Marble St. She and her parents were born in Pennsylvania.

4. Census in 1920 in Dunkerton, Black Hawk, IA. 4 Rebecca H. Bucher, 81, widowed, was living alone at 79 Marble St. She and her parents were born in Pennsylvania.

5. Obituary: Waterloo Courier on 25 Mar 1925 in Waterloo, Black Hawk, IA, USA. Rebecca H. Milliken was born in Pennsylvania Nov 10, 1838. She was married to Thomas M. Hood who was killed in the Civil War. After the death of her husband, she came with her parents to Iowa, about 1863.

In 1868 she was married to Henry Walter Bucher. To this union were born four children, Mrs. Mattie McIntosh, Mrs. Bernice Alexander, who now resides at Dunkerton; Mrs. Blanche Champion, Caspar, Wyoming; and Mrs. Nettie Barlow, who died in 1909. The father, Mr. Bucher, died October 31 the same year.

Mrs. Bucher was one of 13 children, all of whom lived to be past 50 years of age. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Schrack, Oelwein, Iowa; Mrs. Pierce and three brothers, William, Charles, and Samuel Milliken, all of Beresford, S.D.

There are nine living grandchildren, with one deceased, numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bucher lived a long, useful life and always worked hard. She loved to have people around her, keeping boarders after her husband died.

She was the last survivor of the charter members of this church, uniting with it when it was organized at Lester, north of town. She worked for the church in the days of her youthful strength, when there were few to help.

Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church in Dunkerton, with the pastor, J.S. Schroeder, in charge. The following hymns were sung by a quartet: "Jesus, Lover of my Soul", "Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break", "Sweet Bye and Bye". The singers were Mr. & Mrs. F.P. Davis, Mrs. Grace Holdiman, and H.W. Brant, with Mrs. Lilly Magee Miller at the piano.

There was a most beautiful floral display sent in by relatives and friends. Pallbearers were: O.G. Alexander, W.H. McIntosh, G.R. Barlow, Bernard McIntosh, Walter Alexander and Wallace Barlow--three sons-in-law and three grandchildren.

Interment was in the cemetery south of Dunkerton.


Rebecca married Lieutenant Thomas M. Hood, son of Samuel Hood and Martha Campbell, on 4 Mar 1858 in Dakota, Stephenson, IL. (Lieutenant Thomas M. Hood was born about 1837 in , Westmoreland Co. PA and died on 26 Apr 1862.)


Rebecca next married Henry Walter Bucher, son of Christian Bucher and Martha Walter, on 27 Dec 1869 in Lester Twp., Black Hawk, IA. (Henry Walter Bucher was born on 30 Nov 1834 in , , Pennsylvania, USA 5, christened on 7 Jun 1835 in Arendtsville: Arendtsville Union Church (Zion Lutheran and Trinity Reformed), Adams, PA,5 died on 31 Oct 1909 in Dunkerton, Black Hawk, IA and was buried in Dunkerton, Black Hawk, IA.)
