She appeared in the household of Samuel Beeker in a census in 1860 in Tippecanoe Township, Tippecanoe, IN, USA. 3 3 The 1860 census recorded Samuel Beeker, farmer, 34, living with wife Hannah, 18; Mary D., 3; and Eldora, 9 months. Also in the home is farm hand Joseph Pruett, 17. Everyone was born in Indiana except Hannah in Ohio. Samuel's real estate was valued at $3850 and personal estate $395. Two households later is William Beeker, 29, living with wife Elizabeth, 27; Joseph, 3; Lovinas, 2; and Lorsena, 7 months. Also in the home is farm hand John B. Pruett, 21. Oddly, William has no real estate value, but John Pruett has $6260 with a personal estate worth $1395, suggesting he owned the land. On the same page is his mother, widow Barbara Pruitt, 53, living with her children Randolph, 14; Jane, 11, and Margaret 9. Barbara is nee Beeker, the sister of Samuel and William. Everyone was born in Indiana. The post office was Battle Ground.

Census in 1870 in Tippecanoe Township, Tippecanoe, IN, USA. 4 The 1870 census recorded Samuel Becker [sic, handwriting by census taker appears like Becker not Beeker], farmer, 45, living with wife Hannah, 47; Mary D., 12; Elvira, 11; John L., 9; and Lilly J., 3. Everyone was born in Indiana except Hannah in Ohio. Samuel's real estate was valued at $7500 and personal estate $1400. Their post office was Chauncey, a village which today is part of West Lafayette.

The will of Mrs. Mary D. Shigley has been probated in the circuit court. It was drawn up on January 25, 1923, and decrees that $250 be paid to the First Church of Christ. Scientist, in memory of her daughter, Pearl Dobbins, deceased. The sum of $250 is bequeathed to Clair Robinson, reader in the church; $200 to Mrs. Hettie Brommer; $100 to Temple Bailey, a nephew, and $100 to Thornton Beeker, a nephew. An opal and chip diamond . ring is left to Miss Cormine Strate; the household goods to a sister, Mrs. Lillle Beeker Rhyan; and the residue to her sister, Mrs. Lillie Beeker Rhyan and the latter's husband, Clarence O. Rhyan. Mrs. Lillie Beeker Rhyan is named as executrix.


Mary married Dobbins.


Mary next married John W. Shigley, son of William M. Shigley and Mary Ann Gay, on 29 Jul 1885 in Battle Ground, Tippecanoe, IN.1 (John W.
