2. Census in 1940 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. 1 Curiously, the 1940 census lists Earl Beecher, age 8, born in Pennsylvania, apart from a family. He is on a correction sheet 61 A at the end of the census listings for Ward 34, Block 56 of the city, indicating he belongs in household 253 as a "lodger," a term used for someone not part of a family -- normally it should say "son." Checking an earlier census sheet 13 A, we find household 253 in Block 56 lists the following family renting at 1132 57th Street on the 1st floor: Earle Beecher, truck driver for retail department store, 45, with wife Margaret, candy saleslady at public school, 35. Both were born in Pennsylvania and living at the same place in 1935.
