He was the husband of Betty Marie (Klopp) Berkey, who died February 6, 2012. They had been married for 37 years.

Born November 18, 1932 in Philippi, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Oren and Margaret (Schumacker) Berkey.

William was a 1950 graduate of Central Catholic High School.

He was employed as a police officer with the Reading Police Department from 1954-1975, and subsequently as a sheriff's deputy in Reading for a number of years. He retired from Boyertown Packaging where he was employed for 17 years as a print press operator. While there, he also held the position of Industrial Fire Chief for 4 years.

William served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Navy Reserves after 40 years.

He volunteered for various fire companies for over 43 years, including: Hampton Fire Company, Alsace Manor Fire Company and Keystone Hook and Ladder, Boyertown.

Surviving are his two step-children: Paul J., husband of Susan S. Moyer, of Pennside and Susan M. Washington of Spring Township. There are also five step-grandchildren; and eleven step-great-grandchildren.

Burial will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Stitzel Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., Laureldale is in charge of arrangements.
