1. Newspaper: Morning Call: How Eugene Snyder Was Gassed In Action, 23 Aug 1918, Allentown, Lehigh, PA. 1 Private Eugene Snyder, 1112 Chew St., a member of Co. D. 4th Regt., N. P., later transferred to an Indiana regiment, sent to France, wounded, and gassed, and last week sent home to recuperate from the effects, tells a most interesting story of his experiences at the front.
In regard to the manner in which he was wounded he tells the following story.
After going safely through the first action of the Americans on the Somme and various minor engagement, his regiment entered the second battle of the Somme.
After a heavy bombardment of the enemy's lines, the first wave of Yanks was ordered over the top. Ied by a captain, they mounted the parapet with a cheer, and started across No-Man's Land. The German trenches were unbelievedly close.
Snyder was in the first wave. As the men gained the top of the parapet "over the top" a cloud of gas struck them simultaneously with the gas-warning signal. The captain fell with a rifle ball through a vulnerable spot. Snyder fumbled for his gas mask and remembers having half succeeded putting it on, when a revolver bullet passed through his upper right arm, and he dropped. The shock, combined with the effects of the gas, rendered him unconscious. He was taken in by his comrades, and is rapidly overcoming the effects.
Private Snyder, a son of Mr . and Mrs. Wm. O. Snyder, returned to his home last week. On his sleeve he wears the blue "Overseas stripe" and the gold "Wounded stripe." He left his home this morning for Lakewood, N. J., where he will attempt to complete his recuperation in a U. S. Army Base Hospital. He is not disheartened, by any means, but is anxious to return to the fight.
