1. Census in 1860 in Kokomo, Howard, IN. 6 The 1860 census recorded John Birt, tinner, 24, living with wife Adeline, 23, and daughter Hypotia F., 1. Adeline was born in Ohio, the others in Indiana. The post office was Kokomo.

2. Census in 1870 in Kokomo, Howard, IN. 7 The 1870 census recorded John S. Birt, works in tin shop, 34, living with wife Ada A., 33; daughter Fannie, 11; son Willie, 9; and daughter Elizabeth, 7. All were born in Indiana except Ada in Ohio. John's real estate was valued at $300. The post office was Kokomo.

3. Census in 1880 in Arlington, Rush, IN, USA. 8 The 1880 census recorded John S. Burt [sic], works in tin shop, 44, living with wife Adaline, 43; William L., apprentice tin shop, 20; Elizabeth, 17; Robert W., 9; Edward, 6; and Anna L., 9 months born in August. All were born in Indiana except Adaline in Ohio.

4. Obituary: Daily Record: John S. Birt Dead on 31 Dec 1907 in Elwood, Madison, IN. 2 Former Elwood Citizen Passed to His Reward from Frankton.
John S. Birt, a tinner who resided in this city for a few days, but later moved to Frankton, died there yesterday morning. He was the father-in-law of Ed Beher, the former Elwood barber, and a relative of W. H. Bingaman, the photographer. The remains were taken to Darlington this morning over the Panhandle for interment. The Anderson Herald in speaking of the man's death says:
"J. S. Birt, a civil war veteran of Frankton, died early yesterday morning at 72 years of age. The funeral services were held last evening at Frankton in charge of the I. O. O. F. lodge and this afternoon at one o'clock interment will be made at Darlington, his old home.
Mr. Birt was born in Arlington and from there his people moved to the present site of Kokomo, before the city was founded. When the war broke out the family returned to Darlington, subsequently to Elwood, and later he came to Frankton and had since resided there.
In 1863 he joined the 61st Indiana regiment as a musician and served throughout the war. Since the war he had been a band musician and a tinner. His son, Robert Birt, is director of the Frankton band. Other children are Mrs. Lena Geisler, Mrs. Edward Beher of the Frankton hotel, Mrs. Edwin Frank and William Birt, all of Frankton.


John married Adaline Amanda Schwartz. (Adaline Amanda Schwartz was born in 1840 in , , OH and died on 4 Jul 1884 in , , IN 9.)
