1. Newspaper: Courier-Post: Samuel Beecher Dies in Fire, 11 Oct 1997, Camden, Camden, NJ. 5 Frantic neighbors tried, but could not rescue a Blackwood man who died in his burning apartment Friday morning. Shortly after 7 a.m., firefighters found Samuel Beecher, 37, unconscious on the floor of his second-floor apartment at 12 N. Black Horse Pike. "He couldn't make it to the door because fire blocked his exit," said Gloucester Township Police Detective Jim Dougherty. "He was trapped." Beecher was pronounced dead at Kennedy Memorial Hospital, Stratford. The three-alarm fire started accidentally in a kitchen trash can, possibly caused by a discarded cigarette, said investigators from the Camden County Fire Marshal's Office. Several adjacent apartments suffered smoke and water damage. The blaze was contained to Beecher's apartment above the Classy But Sassy lingerie shop, preventing fire damage to a block filled with connected stores and apartments. The blaze snarled rush-hour traffic on the Black Horse Pike as motorists were detoured around the fire scene. Firefighters from the Blackwood, Chews Landing, Blenheim and Lambs Terrace departments responded to the blaze.
