Harold S. Barnes, 73, retired president of Allentown Bobbin Works, died Wednesday in his Barnes Lane, Allentown, home. He was the husband of Helen B. (Hale) Barnes.
Serving in many capacities with the company for many years, he was secretary-treasurer in 1968 and retired in 1970 as president.
His father was cofounder of the business in 1880. The business is thought to be the oldest bobbin manufacturing company in the U.S. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Jacob K. and Kathryn (Hume) Barnes. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Allentown, where he was a former deacon and served on the cornerstone committee.
He was a 1927 graduate of Muhlenberg College. Barnes was known for his Christmas tree nursery business, which he operated on his property from 1958 until his death. He was a Meals on Wheels volunteer for many years with his wife, who is a former president and coordinator. Surviving with his widow are two daughters, Mary wife of H. Hilton Long Jr. of Coatesville R.5, Chester County, and Nancy at home. Services will be at 9:30 a Saturday in the church. A calling period will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until services in the church. The J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown, is in charge of arrangements.
