1. Military in 1781 in , Berkeley, WV: during the Revolutionary War. 1 2 3 4 Enlisted from Berkeley County at the age of 16 in Captain Culbert Anderson's company. He was in service in the Carolinas under General Nathaniel Green.

A Sons of the American Revolution application of Herbert LeRoy Smith Jr. cites Bureau of Pensions file 6726 and the applicant states "George Lewis Coffinberry was a private and served in the Virginia Troops under Capt. Culbert Anderson and Col. Lucis and in General Nathanial Green's Brigade in the Carolinas."

The Sons of American Revolution application of William George Kerr stated: "George Lewis Coffinberry, born February 10, 1760 at Martinsburg, Berkley County, Virginia. At the age of 16 in 1776 he enlisted as private in the Virginia troops and served under Captain Cuthbert Anderson and Col. Lucas in General Nathaniel Green's brigade in the Carolinas. After the age of 72 years, he was granted a pension. The official statement of the above was received from Commissioner of Pensions, Department of the Interior, Washington, D. C. under the date of April 20th, 1896."

George Lewis Coffinberry was a lawyer and was elected to the Legislature in Virginia about 1790. His name was Kaufenbaerger, and while he was serving in that capacity he petitioned the Legislature to change his name to Coffinberry, and it was granted. That is where the name Coffinberry originated and started from.


George married Elizabeth Kline, daughter of George Kline and Elizabeth Truggat, on 5 Dec 1786 in Martinsburg, Berkeley, WV.1 2 (Elizabeth Kline was born on 5 Dec 1768 in , , Alsace, FRA 1 and died about 1858.)
