1. Newspaper: Lebanon Express: Boxer Perry Beecher, 28 Oct 1980, Lebanon, Linn, OR. 5 Like Rocky, Lebanon boxers reach for the top
BY CONNIE WHITAKER Express sports editor
Perry Beecher's daily routine is enough to collapse the average man. For starters, he pumps 350 situps, 350 pushups, jumps rope for 10 minutes or so, then runs five miles. Then he gets down to the serious work. He shadow boxes for 10 minutes, slaps a punching bag for nine minutes, and finishes up in the boxing ring, sparring with another fighter for three rounds. Crazy? Many people would say so. But for Beecher, 24, hard work is the price you pay to make it in boxing, and that's his goal. He's got a lot of company at Lebanon Boxing Club. As a group, the 30 boxers are the most successful in the state, winning better than 80 percent of their bouts. That's an eye popping statistic, considering the club is only two years old and most of the boxers had no previous experience. There are a lot of reasons for its success, but the biggest is its coach, Tom Hickman. He stresses good fundamentals and hard work, and it's paid off . Former world welterweight champion Carlos Palomino, who put on a boxing clinic in Independence last week, praised Hickman's boxers after watching some of them spar. He said, "These kids have been schooled properly," said Hickman. "I think that's quite a compliment. That's what our success is, getting them to do the basics properly. From there, everyone has a different style." The boxers range in age from 10 to around 30, from beginners to champions.

4. Newspaper: Daily Sitka Sentinel: Mills in Oregon Get Alaska Wood, 1 Jul 1992, Sitka, Sitka, AK, USA. 7 Mills in Oregon Get Alaska Wood CORDOVA (AP) -- Cordova loggers have shipped about a million board feet of hemlock and spruce Oregon as sawmills there search replacements for forests set aside protect the spotted owl. The Cordova shipment moved south by barge last week, the Times reported. Perry Beecher, owner of the logging company Sound Development Inc. of Cordova, said it was the time the region's trees had been to the Lower 48 states. Japanese buyers had accounted for much of area's top-quality timber. Beecher said he also has received calls from California mills seeking Alaska wood. Timber companies the Oregon mill's order was a result of scarce supply following protections last year to preserve the spotted owl's habitat About 80 people worked to the Alaska timber. Beecher said shipments depend on the availability of a huge barge.

5. Newspaper: Daily Sitka Sentinel: Perry Beecher Court Case, 21 Mar 1994, Sitka, Sitka, AK, USA. 8 Judge Lifts $6 Million Lien Filed Against Native Land
CORDOVA (AP) -- A $6 million lien against Eyak Corp. land has been declared invalid by a state judge who said it was an improper attempt to gain title to land and timber rights. In a ruling Monday, Anchorage Superior Court Judge Brian Shortsll cited federal law to reject the lien filed by Sound Development, a Cordova area logging company. Shortell said the lien was improper because it inaccurately reflected an amount owed the logging company by Eyak and Sherstone Inc., Eyak's logging subsidiary. Sound Development filed the lien in December on more than 60,000 acres of rain forest owned by the Native corporation. The logging company had cited the lien in a breach-of- contract suit. Perry Beecher, owner of Sound Development, said the company probably would seek a reconsideration appeal. "We're going to move forward," Beecher said. "We're determined and we're mad." The lawsuit, filed in January, claimed that Eyak and Sherstone breached various agreements while it clear-cut trees, built roads and exported timber. Eyak Corp. responded seeking a ruling on the validity of lien, because it could have jeopardized recent agreements with logging giant ITT Rayonier. Sherstone's contract with the Seattle-based company was set to expire if the lien was not removed.
