J. C. Pickering, heretofore of Ashton, has engaged in business in this city. He and his daughter, Mrs. Beecher, have purchased the grocery stock formerly owned by Chas. McIntire. The store is located in the 400 block on North Second street and is patronized by Fourth warders. This firm already possesses many friends and a wide acquaintance here and his little store is bound to flourish and do its share of business.

2. Obituary: Arkansas City Daily Traveler: obituary of J. C. Pickering on 24 Jan 1922 in Arkansas City, Cowley, KS. 1 J. C. Pickering was born in Ohio, December 22, 1839. He emigrated to Illinois where he was married ot Margaret Sparks in 1859. To this union four children were born, Mrs. Beecher of Arkansas City (deceased), Mrs. Neal of Monmouth, Oregon, Mrs. Duncan of Mantsca, Cal., and Walter S. Pickering of Guthrie, Okla. He united with the Masonic order at Bardolph, Ill., in 1872. He came to Arkansas City in 1879 and had resided here until three years ago when, losing his companion, he went to Guthrie and made his home with his son, W. S. PIckering.
While residing in Arkansas City he followed his trade (blacksmithing) a number of years; was engaged int he mercantile business for a number of years; was police judge two years, and was always identified with any movement to better conditions. He died at the home of his son in Guthrie, January 18, 1922, after an illness of nine weeks.


Joseph married Margaret Sparks in 1859 in , , IL.1 (Margaret Sparks was born on 28 Jun 1836 in , , IN,4 5 died on 13 Jun 1918 in Arkansas City, Cowley, KS 4 5 and was buried on 16 Jun 1918 in Arkansas City: Hope Cemetery, Cowley, KS 4.)
