Obituary: Obituary of Virginia (Skippy) on 19 Dec 2021 in Arlington, Arlington, VA. ⁵ Virginia (Skippy) Scrymgeour, age 93, of Arlington, VA passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021 in Arlington, Virginia. She was born in Coronado, California on April 15, 1928. The daughter of Vice Admiral William Gordon Beecher Jr. and Carvilla Brian Benson she led an exciting life.

As the child of a Naval Academy grad she grew up around Navy bases, including Pearl Harbor where, as a teenager, she helped survivors after the attack before leaving for college at William and Mary. Beautiful, brilliant, tall and graceful, she met Naval Attache, J. Bruce Scrymgeour after graduation and they were married in Saudi Arabia while he was stationed in Bahrain. Their lives took them around the world as they supported military and US state department efforts over the next 20+ years before retiring as antique dealers back in Oakton, Virginia.

She continued to travel the world after Bruce's death in 1978, sometimes solo as a passenger on tramp steamers, and often with her sisters-in-law families, spending autumn weeks at Keuka Lake in NY and coastal Maine. Eventually she moved to Arlington and has been a resident of The Jefferson for the past 28 years. It was here she met her next door neighbor with the same first name. Skip Sparks and Skippy shared a loving relationship for many years prior to his recent passing. Despite her struggles with macular degeneration and hearing issues, she maintained her grace until the end. She will be truly missed by everyone who came to know her.

She is survived by her step-daughter, Patricia Peterson of Prince Frederick, Maryland, her brother, Gordon Lee Beecher of Melbourne, Florida, her sister-in-law Sally Mauerman of Port Charlotte, Florida, sister-in-law, Mary Jane Floberg of Seattle Washington, and her many loving nieces and nephews from coast to coast.

There will be no local service. She will be laid to rest with her late husband, Captain John Bruce Scrymgeour at Arlington National Cemetery.
