5. Census in 1870 in Penn Twp., Cumberland, PA. 12 Jesse Beecher, cooper, 48, is living with wife Elizabeth, 50; Leah, 13; and Catharine, 10. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. He has no real estate; possessions are worth $120.

The next line of the census page has Elizabeth Mellinger, 80, living alone [an in-law of the Beechers?] with real esate worth $1,500.

The next household is Jesse's father, George Beecher, laborer, 75, living with wife Margaret, 69, and William Beecher, laborer, 28 [grandson?]. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. George's real estate is worth $1,500 and his possessions $500. The post office is Newville.

6. Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren record book (1877-1926) lists on page 1 as first members 1. John W. Foust 2. Jesse Beecher 3. Eliza Beecher. On image 11 it states Eliza died 18 Dec 1894, and Image 22 states Jesse died 19 Dec 1903. in 1877 in Chambersburg, Franklin, PA. 13

Jesse Beecher, cooper, 55, was living with wife Elizabeth, 60; and Rudolph Shaeffer, mason, 25; and his wife, Mary, 23 [Jesse's daughter].

Edward Beecher, works on farm, 15, was living in the household of Martin Long, huckster, 61, and his wife Susan, 48.

Phillip Beecher, laborer, 45, was living with wife Maria, 45; and "mother" Rebecca, 82, boarding.

Everyone and their parents were born in Pennsylvania.

9. Census in 1900 in Hays Grove, Cumberland, PA. 4 Jessie Beecher, 77, born May 1823, widowed, was listed alone in his household. The previous household is his daughter living with Charles W. Beidel, carpet weaver, 53, Aug 1846, married 19 years to Katie A. [nee Beecher], 40, Aug 1859. She had birthed five children, all alive in 1900: Clarence J., barber, 17, Apr 1883; Emma E., 15, Jan 1885; Charles H., 13, May 1887; John A., 7, Sept 1892; and Harry F., 4, May 1896. Everyone and their parents were born in Pennsylvania, except the elder Charles' parents were from Germany.

10. Obituary: Shippensburg Chronicle: obituary of Jesse Beecher on 24 Dec 1903 in Shippensburg, Cumberland, PA. 1 An Old Soldier Dead
Jesse Beecher, a well known and highly respected citizen of this county, died at his home at Hays Grove, on Saturday from paralysis. Deceased was born in Adams county, Pennsylvania, May 5, 1823. He was aged 80 years, 7 months and 14 days. Mr. Beecher was married to Eliza Foust, October 16, 1851 and to this union two daughters survive, Mrs. R. D. Sheaffer, of this place, and Mrs. Kate Beidel, of Hays Grove. Deceased was a member of the Liberal United Brethren Church. His funeral occurred Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, services conducted by Revs. D. W. Sollenberger and C. B. Wingerd. Interment was made at Hays Grove. Mr. Beecher was a cooper and shingle maker by trade. He enlisted as a private in Captain Samuel B. Deihl's Co. F, 158th Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia on October 16, 1862 and was discharged August 12, 1863 at Chambersburg. His was record was good and he was a faithful attendant at the G. A. R. reunions until prevented by ill health. His disposition was cheerful and his end was peaceful.


Jesse married Mary Ann Claudy, daughter of Martin Claudy and Elizabeth, on 4 Oct 1849. (Mary Ann Claudy was born on 5 May 1826 in , Cumberland, PA,16 17 died on 7 Nov 1850 in Upper Dickinson Twp., Cumberland, PA 16 17 and was buried in Newville: Centerville Lutheran Church, Cumberland, PA 17.)


Jesse next married Elizabeth Foust on 16 Oct 1851 in , Adams, PA.1 (Elizabeth Foust was born on 26 Oct 1819 in , , Pennsylvania, USA,3 18 died on 18 Dec 1894 in Sidetown, Cumberland, PA 3 13 18 19 and was buried in Newville.: Hays Grove United Methodist Church, Cumberland, PA 3 18.)
