We find Jacob, age 62, in Elkhart, Indiana in the 1860 Census, just across the state line from where he appears in 1870 in Michigan, but the microfilm was too poor to document the listing. A better copy must be viewed.

Noted events in his life were:

1. Census in 1870 in Constantine, St. Joseph, MI. ¹ Simon Cotterman, age 31, blacksmith, is living with Sarah, 32; Colin, 13; and Nettie, 7. Also in the household in father-in-law Jacob Bucher, 72, cabinet maker. Simon, Sarah, and Jacob were born in Pennsylvania. The children were born in Michigan. Simon's real estate is worth $1,000 and his possessions $200. The post office is Constantine.

Jacob married.
