4. Newspaper: Manhattan Mercury, 6 May 1890, Manhattan, Riley, KS, United States. 7 Miss Emma Allen's school on College hill closed last week. On Saturday the school enjoyed a picnic in Finney's grove. Miss Allen has given excellent satisfaction, proving herself to be a superior teacher. It is feared that ill health may prevent her from teaching this fall.

5. Obituary: Manhattan Mercury: obituary of Emma Allen on 24 Jun 1891 in Manhattan, Riley, KS, United States. 2 Emma Allen Dead. Miss Emma A. Allen died at her home in this city yesterday evening about nine o'clock, of quick consumption. She had been suffering severely and lying very low for some six weeks, and her death was not unexpected. The funeral was held from the family residence at five o'clock this afternoon.
By request of the deceased, President Fairchild officiated. Miss Allen was an alumnus of the Manhattan high school and of the College. She had the distinction of being the brightest young lady who ever graduated from the College. In April last she was elected to the position of assistant botanist at the College Experiment Station. Just at this point, when life was so attractive and her future was so full of promise, she was prostrated by that insidious disease that annually claims so many victims.
In six short weeks the disease did its work, and the lifeless body now rests on yonder hill. A strange incident is the fact that Miss Allen died on the anniversary of her mother's death, which occurred six years ago in the same room.

6. Newspaper: Manhattan Mercury: Card of Thanks. We desire to most earnestly thank the friends, one and all, who have been so kind and attentive during the sickness and death of our daughter and sister Emma. == W. D. Allen and Family., 25 Jun 1891, Manhattan, Riley, KS, United States. 8

7. Obituary: The Industrialist: Obituary of Emma A. Allen on 27 Jun 1891 in Manhattan, Riley, KS, United States. 9 The Industrialist has at intervals for two months past noted the illness of Emma A. Allen, '89 ; and it has now to announce her death, which occurred at her home in Manhattan on Tuesday-evening, June 23rd, from consumption. Funeral services were held at the residence Wednesday afternoon, conducted, at the request of the deceased, by President Fairchild. About two months ago, following the resignation of Mr. Swingle, Miss Allen took up post-graduate work in botany and drawing, assisting at the same time in the Botanical Department.
She was a close student, and her avowed determination to become a teacher of the sciences would no doubt have been realized had she been permitted a longer lease of life. The resident members of the class of '89 adopted the following resolutions of respect:
Whereas, Death has removed from our midst our esteemed and valued class-mate, Emma A. Allen, and
Whereas, In her death our class loses a worthy member, its brightest scholar, and an untiring worker; therefore be it
Resolved, That we as a class, express to her bereaved friends our sincere sorrow, and mourn with them in the loss of one so dear ; and that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the secretary and the historian of the class, and that the city papers be asked to publish them.
