A resident of Jesup for over sixty-two years, Myrtle was born on July 12, 1930 on her family's farm in Appling County to the late Carlie Colquitt and Vonice Shadron Beecher. She worked as a dental assistant for many years for Dr. Larry Bennett and also worked as a bookkeeper and clerk in the family business, Jones Drug Company. A trendsetter in many ways, Myrtle, along with the late Martha Rawls Smith, operated the very first Head Start Program in Wayne County. Myrtle volunteered countless hours of her time to make her community a better place to live. She served on the board of the Jesup Housing Authority and was a scoutmaster with the Cub Scouts for many years. Myrtle was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Jesup where she taught Sunday School. She was an avid reader who loved plants and flowers. She spent much of her spare time gardening, cooking and traveling; however, family held top priority in her life and she devoted herself to being a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, her husband of sixty-one years, Carey E. Jones; her sister, Nella B. Harrington and her brother, Wendell Beecher, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Alan M. and Lynn M. Jones and Carey B. and Carmen H. Jones all of Jesup; one daughter, Dr. Michelle J. Barthlow and husband, Steven of Woodstock; one sister, Martha Simmons of Waynesville; grandchildren, Kelly McLendon and husband, Joel, Kristan Peavy and husband, Rich, Ginny Jeffery and husband, Todd, Anna Jones, Carlie Jones, Wesley Phelps and Derrick Phelps and great grandchildren, Sophie, Alice, Davis, Reagan, Jep and Lucy Kate. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members also survive.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Jesup with Reverends James Sapp and Michael VonMoss officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the services at the church.

Private interment services were in Jesup City Cemetery.
