In the typewritten transcript of the church record for his daughter Magdalena's baptism, he is listed as "Michael Dows (Tobias)." Since other church records show Tobias family members and even a Michael Tobias it is likely Tobias.

Many researchers mistakenly state that Michael married Maria Magdalena Bucher instead of her sister, Anna Maria Bucher. The marriage record simply states Maria, leading to possible confusion. But when Michael and wife Maria baptize their daughter Magdalena two years after their marriage, Maria's sister Magdalena is listed as the sponsor, ending the confusion.
