JEFFERSON -- Carrying a white orchid and tuberoses on a Brussels lace fan brought from Belgium by the bridegroom, Miss Jo Anna Vannoy became the bride of Walter Boyd Beeker Sunday at 5 p.m. The Rev. M. D. Hart officiated in the First Baptist Church of West Jefferson. She is the daughter of James Granville Vannoy and the late Mrs. Annie Miller Vannoy. She has made her home with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Miller. Her grandfather gave her in marriage. The bride wore a waltz-length gown of silk taffeta and Alencon lace and a tiara of orange blossoms with a shoulder-length illusion veil. Mrs. Richard Speas of Tobaccoville was matron of honor. Other attendants were Mrs. Ralph Little of West Jefferson and the bridegroom's sister, Cynthia of Welcome. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Pierce Beeker of Welcome. His father was best man. Ushers were his brother, Bill, Jack Koontz of Greensboro, Dr. Bob Snider of Mocksville and Fred Hauser. Mrs. Beeker is a graduate of Jefferson High School and Appalachian State Teachers College. For two years she taught at Walnut Cove and will teach in Lexington this fall. Mr. Beeker, a graduate of Welcome High School and Wake Forest College, did graduate work at ASTC.

He received his bachelo or science degree from Wake Forest University in 1950 and his master of education degree from Appalachian State University in 1963.

Among his civic activities, Beeker has been a Cub Scout committee chairman, a vice president of the Welcome Lions Club, a past worthy of the Order of Eastern Star and a past master of the Lexington Masonic Lodge No. 473.

He is a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Lexington.

The father of four children, Beeker is married to the former Jo Anna Vannoy.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 22, 2010, at Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Tom King and Rev. Dr. Steven Pillsbury officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2010, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home.

Mr. Beeker was born April 28, 1929, in Rowan County, to Harvey Pierce Beeker and Mae Greene Beeker. He was a 1946 graduate of Welcome School, attended High Point College, graduated from Wake Forest College, and earned a Masters Degree from Appalachian State Teachers College. He was retired from the Thomasville City School System and was former principal at Southmont Elementary School. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Mr. Beeker served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of the Welcome Civitans, and the Memorial Lodge 473. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Ike Beeker; brother, Bill Beeker; and two sisters, Ann Chinnis and Imogene Crisman.

Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Vannoy Beeker of the home; sons, Walter Beeker, Jr. of Welcome, William Beeker and wife, Debbie, and Vann Beeker and wife, Jennifer, all of Lexington; daughter, Adelaide Beeker of Roxboro; five grandchildren, Clark Beeker, Cole Beeker, Preston Beeker, Olivia Beeker and Emerson Beeker; and sisters, Martha Williams of West River, Md., and Cynthia Blankenship of Irving Texas.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
