Richard was born on April 4, 1934 in Madison, Wisconsin, to Louis W. and Sarah Helen (Thompson) Allen.
Richard married Thelma M. Rosio in 1957 and they are divorced. He later married Kathleen J. Huber Heise in 1990.
Dick is a veteran who graduated from Madison West High School in 1952. He attended college at Whitewater State College. Dick was drafted in October of 1954 to serve in the US Army during the Korean War, serving as a mechanic in the 25th Infantry Division. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii.
During his off-duty time Dick joined a flying club and learned to fly. His solo flight needed to earn his private pilot license was a cross-country flight across the ocean to another Hawaiian island. He went on to earn his commercial pilot license and his instrument flight rating.
After returning from the service, Dick joined his father's business L.W. Allen, Inc. as a sales engineer. LW. Allen, Inc. was a distributor of pumps primarily to municipalities and government agencies to handle water and sewage. He become president after his father retired from the business.
Dick was very knowledgeable about pumps and pump repair and enjoyed sharing his knowledge. After leaving L.W. Allen, Inc. he continued to consult with many regional municipalities about the best maintenance strategies.
To learn everything he could about flying, Dick joined the Experimental Aircraft Association (E.A.A.) and had a lifetime membership. The family has fond memories of camping at the E.A.A. Fly-in during the summers, starting in the early 60's in Rockford, IL and many more years starting in 70's at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Dick and Kathy retired to Wisconsin Rapids and in 2016 they moved to Marshfield, Wisconsin.
Dick also enjoyed collecting model trains. He collected Lionel and H.O. gauge trains. In recent years Dick enjoyed a ride to the A&W Root Beer Stand in Spenser and watching trains go by across the street.
Dick is survived by his wife, Kathleen and children from his first marriage, Richard J. (Leslie) Allen, Susan (Kenneth) Owens and Tammy Allen. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Hans Walor, Taylor (fiancé \endash Ed) Allen, Curtis Owens and Jessica Owens. He is further survived by his brother, Louis Eugene Allen.
