William Wright Bill of Sale Registered May 26th, 1830

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS: That I, Lilly Wright of the County of Hickman and State of Tennessee and Wm. McClanahan, Wm. Cragg, Wm. Briggs, Frances McClanahan, Tabbitha Wright all of the County and State aforesaid and Carter Livesay and Elijah Craig of Maury and Williamson Countys and State aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of Six hundred Dollars to them in hand paid by Wm. Wright of the County of Hickman and State aforesaid hath bargained and sold and delivered unto the said Wm. Wright his heirs and assigns forever a Negro Woman called Chain supposed to be twenty four years old and a sucking child called Peter and we the said heirs of Thomas Wright deceased to wit, Lilly Wright, Wm. McClanahan, Wm. Cragg, Wm. Briggs, Francis McClanahan, Tabbitha Wright, Carter Livesay, Elijah Cragg for ourselves our heirs and assigns do promise and agree to warrant and forever defend said property above mentioned. IN WITNESS of which we the said heirs have hereunto set our hands and seals this the 19th of February 1820.

On the foregoing Bill of sale was written

STATE OF TENNESSEE } January Term 1829 HICKMAN COUNTY COURT} I certify that the within Bill of sale was Exhibited in Open Court and the due execution proven by the Oath of Menerva McClanahan and ordered to be so Certified. Attest: S. Sebastian, Clerk of said County Court.

3. Moved: 1835, Council Bend, Hickman, TN. This link puts a green arrow on the location on Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/JVFGr where the McClanahan's settled, near a bend in the Duck River known as Council Bend, Hickman County, just west of Centerville. The location is officially known on the U.S. Geological Survey maps as McClanahan Hollow, a valley.

4. Book: The History of Hickman County, Tennessee, 1900. 1
William McClanahan came from North Carolina to Davidson and from there to Council's Bend about 1835. He was the father of Absalom McClanahan, who was the father of Robert and Newton McClanahan. Newton was born in Davidson County on August 6, 1833. One of Newton's daughters married John T. Fowlkes. The McClanahans had much to do with building several of the bridges in Hickman County.

5. Cemetery: McClanahan Cemetery in Council Bend: McClanahan Cemetery, Hickman, TN. We have not yet found proof of a tombstone but likely William was buried in the McClanahan Cemetery located on their property. William married Nancy Wright, daughter of Thomas Wright and Lillie Wofford. (Nancy Wright was born about 1780 in , , NC.)
