Bucher obtained a bachelor of arts from Temple University and a master of science from Pennsylvania State University and was chosen to attend the Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army in 1971. Initially, he entered the Army Reserve program and proceeded into the active Army in 1984. Shortly after moving into active duty, Col. Bucher served as a ROTC instructor at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. His time as an instructor was very rewarding, as he engaged and challenged those who ultimately became leaders in the U.S. military. Col. Bucher went on to serve in the logistics field of the Army. He and his family had been stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Fort Lee, Va., and at the U.S. Pentagon. During his tenure in the Army, Col. Bucher was a true warrior and leader of soldiers. He was respected and loved by all his soldiers, Marines, airmen, sailors and civilians that he served with until his retirement in 2003. Never one to stay idle, Col. Bucher became a logistician with SAIC. Those who knew John will miss his sense of humor and tolerant, lovable personality. As a youth, he formed the band "The Deltas" and was an accomplished guitarist. His respect of people of all walks of life was evident to all who knew him. John's comical stories and vast knowledge of military history and world events entertained and fascinated many audiences. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered by all those he touched. He was the son of the late John Herbert and Sarah (Barstler) Bucher. John is survived by his son, John Richard Bucher of Chester; his daughter, Ellen Elizabeth Bucher of Chester; his stepson, Tom Ropel of Atlanta, Ga.; nephews, John, Richard and Michael Ross McAllen; sister, Ellen Bucher McAllen; in addition to his friend, Cindy Vaughn of Richmond.
