Firetorn city family shocked, but recovering from disaster
---
A Salinas family is still in a state of shock today, after a fire which struck its rented home at 15 Plumas Way last Friday took all it owned. Arlene Oligschlaeger said this morning she is still stunned by the blaze that took an estimated $10,000 of her family's possessions. But some help is on the way from the family. A trust fund has been set up and some emergency donations have been made to help the Oligschlaegers get back on their feet again. A trust fund was established this week at Valley National Bank, and donations of bedding, dishes, some furniture and clothing have been made by the Red Cross and individuals. A neighbor, Mrs. Edwin Sullivan, 566 E. Alvin Drive, helped house the family's five children, two dogs and a cat before the group moved into an apartment at 914-29 Acosta Plaza. People have given us so much, Mrs. Oligschlaeger said this morning, amidst attempts to set up temporary housekeeping. We're still short of bedding, two beds and some living room furniture. A kitchen table was donated, but chairs are still needed. Mrs. Oligschlaeger said she plans to go back to work Monday at Speigl Foods. Her husband, Norbert, works for Coastal Ford Tractors. She said the devastating fire was such a blow that she is still taking medication, so I don't fall apart. We were renters, and we didn't have insurance, she said. We've been married 19 years, and we lost 19 years of accumulated stuff. Replacing those personal belongings won't be easy, she added. Mrs. Oligschlaeger said Friday's fire, which Salinas firemen discovered shortly before noon, was probably started by a child who left a burning candle in a bedroom closet. The blaze took firemen about 90 minutes to control and clean up, and caused about $45,000 damage to the structure. Oligschlaegar's car was also damaged, about $300 worth, officials estimated. No one was in the house at the time the blaze broke out. Lack of credit has complicated the family's losses. We don't have charge accounts…seven years ago my husband went bankrupt, Mrs. Oligschlaegar said. So we either buy with cash or else. The $370 a month rent on the new apartment is more than the family can afford, she said, but it's hard to find a place that accepts kids and pets. The family also lost two weeks' supply of groceries which had just been purchased before the fire. We were making out all right, Mrs. Oligschlaegar said. I'm not as upset now as when it first happened. I was a crying mess. Now I'm just grateful the kids and animals are all right.
